Horizontal – Vertical

In 2018 the Alps Art Academy, its accompanying symposium, and the Land Art Biennale Art Safiental will be devoted to the topic: HORIZONTAL – VERTICAL.

The theme relates to the canonical land and earth artworks of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which, often located in deserts of the American South-West, were predominantly concerned with the horizontal. These trends have been juxtaposed by more recent tendencies from the Alpine area increasingly concerned with the vertical. The vertical as a field of inquiry is reflected in the choice of this year’s academy cohort: instructors and the speakers at the symposium, the artists invited to participate in the 2018 biennale Art Safiental and the authors who will contribute to the publication Landscape.

In 2018 around 30 participants from 20 countries will participate in a 10-day program (28 June – 7 July 2018) exploring new trends in Land and Environmental art. The program consists of nine workshops and five master classes under the guidance of 11 instructors.
